About Sinclair

Finding the Need

Sinclair Community College was founded as an adult training school by David A. Sinclair in 1887. As the director of the Dayton YMCA, Mr. Sinclair saw a need for basic education and vocational training for adults who were adjusting to what was then a transitional economy.

David Sinclair’s motto – “Find the need and endeavor to meet it.” – applies to today’s changing economy as well, as our region adjusts to globalization and new ways of doing business. More than ever, our community’s working adults and high school graduates need the affordable, high quality education that Sinclair provides, education that meets the needs of both students and employers in our area.

Now with an enrollment of over 22,000, Sinclair Community College is one of the largest community college campuses in America. Based in downtown Dayton, with several suburban Learning Center operations, it has a national reputation for excellence evidenced by frequent national and state awards. Thanks to the support of the Montgomery County region, Sinclair is among the top community colleges in the nation.
